Dementia can be a distressing and uncomfortable diagnosis for both the individual and their family. Often, the family know that something isn't quite right before a diagnosis is given - early signs of dementia may have been evident months or even years before a GP or other health professional suggests dementia may be the problem. Family members can then find themselves being gradually removed from the role of a husband or wife, son or daughter and being given a label of their own - “carer”.
